The Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH, for its Spanish acronym) denounces to the national and international public the murder attempts against Tomás Gomez Membreño, General Coordinator of COPINH and Alexander García Sorto, community leader of Llano Grande, Colomoncagua.

The Civil Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras, 6 months after the assassination of COPINH’s General Coordinator, hereby states that: The assassination of the woman who served as COPINH’s General Coordinator and who was a founding member of the organization was a crime committed against the entire Lenca people’s struggle to build autonomy and defend Mother Earth, our shared natural resources, and our rights as indigenous peoples.

Por Giorgio Trucchi El Ministerio Público hondureño dio a conocer la detención de cuatro sospechosos del asesinato de Berta Cáceres, un teniente retirado del ejército y subjefe de seguridad de DESA, un mayor de las Fuerzas Especiales de las FFAA, el gerente social y ambiental de DESA y un capitán retirado del Ejército.

La Vía Campesina denounces the grave criminalization taking place in Honduras today in the form of prisons, repression and the assassination of peasant and indigenous leaders. In the last few weeks the situation has worsened greatly with the proliferation of hired assassins aiming to take the lives of those who demand land to produce food, of those who struggle against extractivism, dams, and agribusiness.

Berta Cáceres, coordinator of the National Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), was murdered on March 2, 2016. Organizations around the world rose up in protest in Berta’s name. She is yet another victim of the abuses carried out with impunity in Honduras against those who defend the land, the water, and the right of communities to remain on their lands.
