A mining project threatens to forever destroy the Ampasindava Peninsula—an area that is home to some 33,000 people, primarily in farming and fishing communities. The company Tantalum Rare Earth Malagasy (TREM) has obtained a 300 km2 concession from the Malagasy government to extract rare earth minerals—the most contaminating kind in the world.
