In the city of Altamira, Pará, Brazil, this June 13-17 – on the eve of the Rio+20 conference – the Movimento Xingu Vivo para Sempre (Xingu Alive Forever Movement) will be hosting an event called Xingu+23. The name refers to the 23 years that have passed since 1989, the year of a historic meeting in Altamira that led to the successful halting of plans to build a hydroelectric dam on the Xingu River at the time. Although construction of the Belo Monte dam on the Xingu River has already begun, despite numerous irregularities, illegalities and protests, representatives of riverine communities, fisherfolk, indigenous peoples, farmers, urban dwellers and other defenders of the Xingu plan to meet for four days in one of the communities most seriously impacted by the dam. They will organize festive activities, discussions and protests to join forces once again against this mega project, which will lead to the destruction of 50,000 hectares of Amazon rainforest, the violation of rights and the expulsion of thousands of people.
