REDD stands for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation. Amended to REDD+ or REDD-plus, the concept includes forest conservation, sustainable forest management and the carbon that can be stored by “reforestation”, including through industrial tree plantations. Although REDD+ is directly related to tropical forests and deforestation, REDD+ is being debated by the UN under the Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) and seen by Northern countries as an important option for them to ‘reduce’ carbon emissions by paying someone else to provide the actual emission reduction for them, and by Southern countries as an opportunity of getting money for forest conservation. REDD+ pilot projects clearly show that REDD is a severe new threat for forest populations.
