Tree species being manipulated:

  • Acacia mangium and Sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria). GE trees produced in December 2004. (1)

Aim of genetic manipulation

  • For acacia, increased CO2 fixation by trees (carried out by JSPS-LIPI –see below). (1)

Those carrying out the research:

  • Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences (JSPS) and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) (1)

Involvement of foreign research partners:

  • Japanese researchers from the following universities: Utsunomiya, Kyoto (RISH),Tokyo (Univ. Agri. Technol.) and Shimane (1)

Those who provide support to research:

Regulatory framework for research and field trials:

Field trials:

  • The Japanese-led JSPS-LIPI project produced 750 GE Acacia mangium and 400 GE Sengon trees in Indonesia. Some 130 Mangium and 30 Sengon trees are being kept at the Serpong Botanical Garden. The whereabouts of the other seedlings is unknown. (1)
  • No more recent information on this field trial or follow up research has been found
